Not One for the Kids

No More Heroes 2 has a rare combination of charm and intensity. Travis Touchdown is a delightful little scamp who gets a rush out of a good old fashioned decapitation. He is gleefully juvenile, as is the game’s fixation on blood and boobs.

The art oozes with style and the game looks beautiful in motion. The cut scenes are smooth, but it is a little “talky” in the beginning. I like my games to get right to the gameplay-

-which is where NMH2 really shines: simple and fun, with smart motion controls. It is very satisfying to beat the crap out of a henchman and finish him off with a slice of the Wii remote or a suplex into the concrete. There’s not too much different from the first game here. If it’s not broke…

Traveling from point to point is much more streamlined than in the first NMH. Going from the motel to a side job takes nothing more than selecting from a menu. It makes navigating the city of Santa Destroy much easier, but it is still not a fleshed out, sandbox style, city.

The most notable improvement is in the side jobs themselves. All (save for one) are in glorious 8-bit and are all spectacular. There’s a good mix of action, racing and puzzle and are a fun way to earn cash for weapons and clothes.

No More Heroes 2 recreates the addiction of 8-bit and 16-bit classics that most modern games cannot. It has a rare quality that keeps you coming back for more: just one more mission, just one more try at the gym, just one more side job to try to earn the cash for that new katana.

Mark Bozon over at IGN says that NMH2 is “a game that knocks on your front door, waits for you to answer in a towel and your favorite pair of slippers, rips your head off, and shoves itself down your throat.” I couldn’t agree more, unless he said it’s a game that knocks down your front door, beats you in the head with a bat, throws you on the couch, slaps its dick in your face and fucks your girlfriend in the shower. If that sounds like your kind of thing, then it’s $50 well spent.
